Midwives
Why choose the midwifery model of care…
01 — Prioritize People
Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle. Midwives see you for many visits prior to birth and several after to ensure the full spectrum of care and health.
02 — Professional & Ethical Practice
Providing the parents with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support.
03 — Practice Effectively
Midwives respect for the intricacy of the natural physiology of childbirth and belief that women's bodies are well designed for birth.
04 — Preserve Safety
Midwives try to protect, support, and avoid interfering with the normal processes; thus they try to avoid unnecessary use of obstetric interventions. When intervention is needed, midwives are trained to recognize this and transfer as needed to the nearest hospital.

Peninsula Midwives believes that being pregnant and giving birth are normal physiological events, as well as transformative life experiences for all involved.
A family has the right to give birth in a satisfying and meaningful way. My focus is on the normalcy of the process, while maintaining the relevant skills to manage the variations of normal and potential complications. I utilize my knowledge, experience and clinical judgment to assess when a recommendation to transfer care may be appropriate.
Peninsula Midwives is a solo homebirth midwifery practice, led by Maya Horrocks, based in Port Townsend. Maya provides holistic, individualized and respectful care during the full childbearing cycle. As a midwife, I believe all those who wish to become pregnant should have physical, emotional, and social support during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I believe that pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding are normal, healthy events that have the potential to be strengthening and empowering.
I believe that, within the bounds of safety, all people should have the right to birth how, where, and with whom they choose. I believe in the importance of prenatal education, planning, and shared decision-making with my clients. I strive to build relationships with my clients built on trust, respect, and understanding. -
